Icon Set Final Summation

In my Geek Culture icon set I embodied the essence of the Modern Geek. In this set I wanted to communicate geek culture but also the geek of today. Technologically adapt, conscious of trends, and styles. Geek is no longer a bad word and I want this set to reflect that.

By using hard lines and jagged edges I wanted to portray bold, cutting edge stylistic choices. My color pallet reflecting the bright color saturated world of over powered computers, flashy videogame consols, and peripherals. Also by referencing some key historical geek icon senses I paid hommage to the Zelda Tri-force, and the Nintendo Entertainment System.

I worked to keep the icons cohesive and legible many times over. I had a lot of problems working with the angles that a lot of my images had taken in relation to one another. I hope to have solved this issue with changing the perspective of the icons and giving them perspective change.

In this project I learned that I need to be very careful in selecting images to work with when in the creation of icons. I know now that I need to focus on building a better understanding perspective grids prior to undertaking a project. All and all I am pleased with the project and I am excited for the next step.

Icon Set - Color Progression

After last critique I have decided to merge my positive/negative 3 color composition with my 2 color outline composition. Above the 3 color outline is the result.

I will have five sets total when completed.

Seven Deadly Sins - Photo Comparison

On the Left is the first round of images. On the right are the second round of images.

This time I shot with repositioned lighting and in HDR. These are currently without adjustments. Taking a few pointers from critique last class I tried to invoke more energy, and more emotion in the images. I had to break one of my rules of trying to keep the images clean. I didn't want to tear the cake apart at first but I realized that it fit the concept so much better to. The camera is now positioned closer to the table and cake in particular without such a top down view. By making the choice to remove the plates there was less I was forced to capture and was able to narrow down the framing.

I would also like to add that its pretty awesome having an excuse to buy several cakes for a design project. The carrot cake tasted better I might add. Nothing beats cream cheese icing. Nothing.

Two cakes were harmed in this project and it was delicious.

Here is an example of how I created my soft lighting using cheap photoflood's from home depot w/ 60w lights so they didn't burn or over whelm the capabilities of the fabric.
